SUMMARY:Religious Freedom for All: Remembering the Victims of Acts of Violence
DESCRIPTION:Freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) is the protection of the conscience and the free exercise of people’s understanding of the ultimate truth. It is not only a fundamental right but also an individual\, institutional\, private and public right as well. As enshrined in the First Amendment\, the Articles 18\,19\, and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights also protect the rights to freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly and association. However\, not every region is always a stronghold of allowing people to live by their core values and beliefs. The rate of ill-treatment against religious institutions\, people\, objects\, or events is increasing significantly. \nOn August 22\, 2019\, UN General Assembly recognized this by adopting a resolution declaring “International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief”. \nUpholding these rights and responding to the alarming increase in persecutions of religious people and communities around the world\, we believe within the scope of open\, constructive\, and respectful exchanges at various platforms across local\, national\, and international levels will be invaluable assets in confronting these ongoing acts of intolerance. To that end\, Rumi Forum has invited distinguished speakers to address various dimensions of the topic. \nOn August 20th\, our moderator Sabrina Dent and speakers Richard T. Foltin\, Kirsten Lavery\, and Rev. William H. Lamar IV\, will share their insights on highlight mechanisms to prevent unfair treatments towards individuals\, communities\, and minorities. \n \nThursday\, August 20\, 2020 \n\n6:00 – 7:15 pm\n \nONLINE WEBINAR: Links will be provided as you register. \n \nFree and Open to the Public – Consider supporting our work!\n \n\n  \nModerator: \nSabrina Dent\, Senior Faith Adviser\, Americans United for Separation of Church and State \n \nSabrina is a life-long advocate for human rights and social justice. Before joining the AU team\, Sabrina worked as director of recruitment and admissions at the Religious Freedom Center of the Freedom Forum. Prior to her time at the Religious Freedom Center\, Sabrina served as program coordinator for the Doctor of Ministry Program at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University (STVU). Sabrina is the past president of the Interfaith Community of Greater Richmond. Sabrina earned her master of divinity degree and doctor of ministry degree from STVU. SUMMARY:Virtual Coffee Night Series: Facing the COVID-19 Challenge with Empathy and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum is proud to launch the Coffee Night speaker series. Needless to say\, coffee has had a significant place in our lives for ages. Most of us maintain a strong habit of starting the day with it. Some use it anytime\, anywhere to boost energy and for many\, the popularity of coffee is given. However\, what coffee introduces into our lives is not limited to keeping us awake and serving the purpose of a caffeine boost\, but also it also characterizes an integral part of social culture. \nWe often say “Let’s have a cup of coffee” to imply “Let’s have a conversation”. Coffee facilitates many fruitful exchanges\, giving it an invaluable place regardless of the context. That being said\, we believe that nothing beats a nice relaxed conversation and invite you both to relieve ourselves over a cup of coffee and to stimulate our minds with various light-hearted talks. Prominent speakers from a variety of backgrounds will be part of this series and all together we will have enriched conversations. \nFriday\, April 10\, 2020 \n6:00 – 7:00 pm \nONLINE WEBINAR: Link will be provided as you register.  \nFree and Open to the Public –  \nSPEAKER: \n \nDr. Peter Cohen received his Ph.D. from Florida State University in Humanities and Religion\, his M.A. from Florida State University in Biblical Studies and his B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Springfield College. His dissertation was entitled “A Motif Index of the Angel of Death in Early Rabbinic Literature.” Dr. Cohen came to Clemson in 1995 after teaching at Appalachian State University\, Florida State University\, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College. His teaching interests revolve around looking at the common traits shared by the religious traditions of the world\, rather than looking for their differences. Dr. Cohen can often be found teaching adult education in area churches on Sunday mornings or as an instructor in the University’s Osher Life Long Learning Institute for retired people from the community. Presently\, he is teaching the general education courses in Religion for the department. \n

SUMMARY:Book Event: "Fethullah Gulen: A Life of Hizmet"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book signing event with author Dr. Jon Pahl featuring his recent biography of Fethullah Gulen. The event will be moderated by Dr. Ori Z. Soltes from Georgetown University. \nREGISTER HERE\nIn this first critical biography of Fethullah Gülen in English\, historian Dr. Jon Pahl takes us on a journey where we discover wisdom and controversy\, from 1940’s Turkey to the U.S. in the twenty-first century. Dr. Pahl tells the story of a pious Muslim boy from a tiny and remote Turkish village who on the one hand has inspired a global movement of millions of individuals dedicated to literacy\, social enterprise\, and interreligious dialogue\, but who on the other hand has been monitored by Turkish police\, seen as a threat by autocrats\, and recently declared number one enemy by the current Turkish government. With lively prose and extensive research\, Dr. Pahl traces Fethullah Gülen’s life and thought in its contexts\, states clearly his own positions\, and then lets readers draw their own conclusions from the evidence about this undeniably significant historical figure. \nDr. Pahl weaves this fascinating  life into a narrative marked by five key elements\, patterns\, or relationships in Gülen’s life: integrity of participation in the nonviolent practices of Islam; principled pluralism—manifest in a commitment to dialogue; engaged empathy—deep feeling for the suffering of the world\, and willingness to engage on behalf of alleviating that suffering; a commitment to spiritual and scientific literacy; and an organizational model of social enterprise. \nDr. Pahl\, a strong believer of religions as catalysts for peace\, crafts through the story of Gülen and the Hizmet Movement an introduction to Islam for non-Muslim readers\, for the questions he brings to Gülen’s life story are also the questions others bring to Islam more broadly. \n

SUMMARY:Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism
DESCRIPTION:Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism \n\n\n\nJoin us on October 11th as we sit down with Ken Bedell to talk about his new book Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism. \nDate: Wednesday\, October 11th\, 2017 \nReception: 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.  \nBook Talk: 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \n2000 P St NW\, Suite 503 Washington\, DC 20036 \nREGISTER HERE  \n  \nBook Synopsis: \nThis book explains why America can realize the civil rights dream in the 21st century—if U.S. citizens take actions as individuals as well as work together for equality. \nIt has been more than 53 years since Martin Luther King Jr. made his “I Have a Dream” speech. Why has the United States still not been able to make King’s dream a reality after a half a century of effort and progress? Is there still hope of full participation for all in America? \nIn Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism\, author Kenneth B. Bedell proposes a civil rights dream that grows out of American history and speaks to the 21st-century reality. He makes the case that by adopting a larger perspective of the role of racism in preserving U.S. social\, cultural\, economic\, and political institutions and practices\, Americans can understand why it has been so difficult to fulfill the promises of the 1960s civil rights dream. Bedell describes and applies sociological theories that serve to explain why racism is still prevalent in the United States and identifies the steps that are necessary to overcome racism. The book concludes with proposals for ways to apply social science to realize the civil rights dream and examples of how individuals can take action to make a difference. \nFeatures: \n\nAsks—and answers—the troubling question: Why have the civil rights hopes of the 1960s not yet been realized?\nDemonstrates the relationship between what happens in everyday life and racism’s persistence\nProvides insightful historical context for racism as it exists in the 21st century\nPresents a framework for understanding how social forces preserve racism\nOffers a refreshingly optimistic perspective that racism can be overcome\n\nAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Realizing-Civil-Rights-Dream-Diagnosing/dp/1440853754 \n  \nKen Bedell\, author of Realizing the Civil Rights Dream: Diagnosing and Treating American Racism earned his doctorate in sociology from Temple University and has graduate degrees in education (New York University)\, theology ( the University of South Africa and Colgate Rochester/Crozer Divinity School)\, and in chemistry (Cornell University). SUMMARY:Immigration Data on Demand (iDod) with Justin Lowry
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Rumi Forum\, Wednesday\, February 22nd\, 2017 at 6:30 pm for a presentation on the economic impact of immigrant groups\, with particular emphasis on economic contributions of immigrant entrepreneurs with Justin Lowry of George Mason University’s Institute for Immigration Research. \nThe Institute for Immigration Research at George Mason University aims to refocus the immigration conversation among academics\, policy-makers\, and the public\, including the business community and media\, by producing and disseminating unbiased and objective\, interdisciplinary academic research related to immigrants and immigration to the United States. As a joint venture with The Immigrant Learning Center\, Inc. (ILC) of Massachusetts\, the research conducted by the IIR examines the economic impact of all immigrant groups\, with particular emphasis on economic contributions of immigrant entrepreneurs possessing high levels of education or skills. The IIR’s concentration on economic questions is nuanced by a socially oriented scientific perspective. \nJustin Lowry will be presenting these findings related to IIR’s Immigration Data on Demand (iDod) service. This service helps individuals and institutions examine the immigrant populations of their particular geography\, and will demonstrate how immigrants provide vital contributions to the economy and society of our nation. Ultimately\, the goal of the iDod project is to create collaborations and connect people with data from their particular region or sector of interest on immigrant populations. \nTo learn more about iDod and the IIR’s work please visit:http://iir.gmu.edu/idod/immigration-data-on-demand-idod \nREGISTER HERE
