SUMMARY:Exhibit: "Un-Muted - The Silent Voices of Political Persecution in Turkey"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit and presentation was a powerful and moving visual experience of a highly harsh reality happening in Turkey now.  \nThe Hizmet people are seekers of peace and justice; they are committed to education and the eradication of poverty throughout the world. The government\, led by President Erdogan\, has evolved into a brutal\, military regime that tortures and imprisons the Hizmet people linked by membership or affiliation with a peaceful and liberal Islamic faith expression. Under the guise of Islamic law\, President Erdogan has misused political power to isolate and eliminate opposition\, resulting in quashing voices of dissent in a country once a bastion of liberal democracy. Many Hizmet and Kurdish people have lost their lives at the hands of this injustice. \nThe exhibit consists of around 40 pieces and their detailed stories\, such as Kurdish political prisoner Garibe Gezer who was sexually harassed\, tortured\, and killed in jail; dismissed professor Haluk Savas who was denied his right to travel to get medical treatment for cancer and eventually died\, 11-year-old Kurdish girl Cemile Cagin who was killed by a sniper during a curfew and whose dead body had to be kept in a freezer by her mother for days\, and Ahmet Burhan Atac\, a young boy who died of cancer before his mother was denied her right to travel with him to get treatment. \nThe artifacts in this exhibit were generously donated by the families of voices silenced by torture\, persecution\, and death. We are grateful for this opportunity to unmute their voices and share their stories through this presentation. \nEvent Video \n\n  \nEvent Photos \n[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”411″ display=”basic_thumbnail” thumbnail_crop=”0″]Co-Sponsored by: \nAdvocates of Silenced Turkey`s mission is (1) to address all human rights violations in Turkey regarding civil\, political\, economic\, social\, and cultural as contained in the basic human rights documents; (2) to prevent genocide\, crime against humanity\, arbitrary detention\, torture and ill-treatment\, and discrimination and to defend the right to life\, rule of law\, right to privacy\, freedom of expression\, freedom of thought\, conscience\, and religion\, freedom of associations\, and (3) to utilize all human rights advocacy tools\, mechanisms\, and systems that can possibly be used to protect and promote the human rights of those whose voices are being silenced in Turkey and beyond. \n[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

These quakes have caused the widespread destruction and collapse of buildings\, with likely thousands of deaths and many thousands more injuries in Turkey and northwestern Syria. The epicenter of the quake was in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş\, and tremors were felt intensely in the surrounding provinces and cities such as Kahramanmaras\, Hatay\, Osmaniye\, Adıyaman\, Gaziantep\, Şanlıurfa\, Diyarbakır\, Malatya\, Kilis and Adana. Embrace Relief has launched an aid campaign to meet the urgent needs of the victims of the devastating Feb. 6 earthquakes\, and to help support the rebuilding efforts of the people of southern Turkey. SUMMARY:Community Event: "Lox&Vodka and Tabla for Two" Concert
DESCRIPTION:A special evening crossing cultures is probably exactly what we need right now – and the music is pretty good too! Please welcome the Klezmer sounds of Lox & Vodka and the Afghani and Indian beats of Tabla for Two. Tabla for Two’s motto of “playing for peace” would probably be a good tagline for a show of healing music that will lift spirits and calm souls\, promoting understanding and connection through music. \n  \nLox & Vodka started because of their love of the music\, the rich traditions\, the wonderful holiday celebrations\, and the deep spirituality Judaism offers. Klezmer music\, which they define as Jewish soul music\, has been in existence since the Middle Ages when klezmorim (itinerant musicians) would travel from shtetl (village) to shtetl to play for Jewish weddings and other celebrations. Today\, Lox & Vodka travels from simcha to simcha where our horas are always action-packed\, with your guests lifting the honorees high on chairs.  And we teach fun and simple Israeli folk dances\, an incredibly memorable experience for everyone. \nLearn more about Lox & Vodka at  www.loxvodka.com  and sample their music at www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wDl8KUj17k \n  \nTabla for Two is a unique duo consisting of Masood Omari and Abigail Adams Greenway. They play traditional and classical music from Afghanistan and India\, old Bollywood favorites\, as well as Omari’s original compositions\, which blend classical Eastern beats with Western-style beats — a fusion of East and West that is mirrored in their own partnership. They call it “New Music for the New World.”  \nTheir music has been described as mesmerizing\, energizing\, transcendent\, and healing. Masood is blessed with the remarkable skill of playing the tabla and singing at the same time\, a feat that is generally seen as impossibly difficult. Masood is from Ghazni\, Afghanistan. Abigail is from Erie\, Pennsylvania. Learn more about Tabla for Two at  www.tablafortwo.com  and sample their music at youtube.com/watch?v=bbMbPjFc5z0&t=3s \n

SUMMARY:Community Event: "Together We Rise Against Hunger" on World Food Day
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum and its partners have participated in the largest Rise Against Hunger packing event in the state of Virginia this year. 1\,000+ volunteers packed 165\,000 life-changing meals. Thank you for helping us reach our 5-year goal of packing 1\,000\,000 meals! \nThe meals we packed are shipping to Haiti. In August\, Haiti suffered massive devastation from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake followed only three days later by tropical depression Grace\, which dumped heavy rains on an already shaken country\, creating flooding and mudslides. \nMore than ever\, the people of Haiti need to know that we care about them\, we love them\, and we want to do what we can to show them compassion. Thanks to members of Christian\, Jewish\, and Muslim faith communities\, all generously sharing their time\, talent\, and treasure\, 165\,000 meals will nourish Haitians next month. \nYou can find more information about the event here. \nCommunity Partners\n \nMeal Packing Event\n \nMillionth Meal Celebration Video

SUMMARY:Community Event: Support "Trudy Conway Memorial Fund" for Afghan Refugees
DESCRIPTION:In order to honor our former board member`s legacy\, Rumi Forum set up a fundraiser\, “Trudy Conway Memorial Fund”\, to support Catholic Charities USA`s efforts to help our new Afghan neighbors. \nWith the support of our friends\, we raised $1\,500. \n——————— \nTrudy Conway was a much loved and widely accomplished author and professor of philosophy at Mount St. Mary’s University. She also served as a board member on the Rumi Forum. \nIn order to honor her legacy\, Rumi Forum would like to fundraise for a “Trudy Conway Memorial Fund” to support Catholic Charities USA efforts to help our new Afghan neighbors. \nTrudy Conway and her family have been an advocate and supporters for Catholic Charities for years. She truly believed in their mission to be on the frontlines; providing vital resources and services to children\, families\, and individuals; ensuring that they are fed\, sheltered\, and comforted in their greatest time of need.   \nWe ask that in lieu of flowers\, please honor Trudy by supporting this great organization and its support efforts.   \nThanks so much for your support… and please don’t forget to send this page to any friends you think might be interested in donating! \n

SUMMARY:Community Event: "Tabla for Two"-Sufi Music Concert Celebrating Rumi’s Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum and FocusMusic are delighted to present “Tabla For Two”: a unique duo consisting of Masood Omari and Abigail Adams Greenway. \nTabla for Two performs traditional and classical music from Afghanistan and India\, old Bollywood favorites\, as well as Omari’s original compositions\, which blend classical Eastern beats with Western-style beats – a fusion of East and West that is mirrored in their own partnership. \nThis special performance will feature select poems from Rumi\, the great 13th-century mystic\, poet\, and jurist whose message of love\, compassion\, and mercy continues to inspire millions today. The event will be an opportunity to learn more about Rumi’s legacy and core teachings as we reflect on some of his highlight lines before each song. \nIf you are interested in having a remarkable experience with Rumi’s radiant message to embrace the East and the West\, join us as we host Tabla for Two – an Afghan and an American singing his lines with authentic instruments and an unquestionably unique style! \nAbigail Adams Greenway and Masood Omari \n \nFull Event Video

SUMMARY:Voices of the Heart: Forgiveness
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 16th we started our new small discussion series: Voices of the Heart. The first topic we discussed was centred around forgiveness.  \n March 16th\, 2018\n \n7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.\n \nEzher Mosque\n10359 B Democracy Lane\nFairfax VA 22030 \n  \nLearn more and do more with our new discussion series: Voices of the Heart. This new initiative is meant for you and others to gain a deeper understanding of the people who surround you and for you to present to them your perspective on your faith\, your life\, and your traditions. This small round table discussion setting is designed for attendees to meet one another and immerse themselves in conversations about social problems\, community issues\, and other topics relevant to society from the basis of their faith or non-faith. \n“The lamps are different\, but the light is the same” ~ Rumi \nOur first discussion topic will center around forgiveness and its importance. What has God taught us about forgiveness? How do we practice that in our daily lives? To be able to forgive is a skill that is extremely powerful because it not only is the healthiest thing that you can do for your physiology and your spirituality but in that\, you have the opportunity to practice patience\, maturity\, and strength. As humans we are all prone to make mistakes that might intentionally or unintentionally hurt those around us\, so how do we go about practicing this act of self-love and peace? What do our traditions tell us and what can we teach others? Join us March 2nd as we explore this topic! \n“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this\, we are less prone to hate our enemies.” ~ Martin Luther King\, Jr.

SUMMARY:Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk was held on May 21st\, 2017 with the mission of bringing faith communities together to appreciate each other and feel part of the same whole despite our differences. \nThroughout the approximately 3 miles walk the group visited 8 different house of worship in the Fairfax community where they had the chance to engage members of the community of different backgrounds in constructive dialogue in an effort to get to know and appreciate each other. It is important in today’s world to reach out to our neighbours who may be strangers in order to unify as a community that is all part of the same whole. \nThe walk took place on May 21st between 2 PM and 5 PM. The group started at the Fairfax United Methodist Church and continued by visiting St Leo the Great Catholic Church\, Daniels Run Peace Church\, Ezher Mosque\, Truro Anglican Church\, Fairfax Presbyterian Church\, Fairfax Baptist Church\, and end with the Christ Lutheran Church. At each stop\, the group spent 5 minutes learning about that faith tradition. Please note that since there was no Jewish temple or a non-Abrahamic place of worship within the walking distance of this route\, those faith traditions were invited to have a space in some of the churches along this route.
