The result is often a deeper understanding of others and one’s own scriptures and the development of strong bonds across faith communities. \n              Scriptural Reasoning – Introduction               Reading Material: Clothing and Modesty \n                       \nThis Month’s Study Leader\n \nDr. Nisa Muhammad is Howard University’s Assistant Dean for Religious Life. She is responsible for religious programming\, advocates for the religious needs of Muslim students\, faculty\, and staff\, teach nonacademic classes on the Islamic tradition\, and works closely as part of the staff in the Office of the Dean of the Chapel to foster interfaith dialogue and cooperation. She organizes Muslim worship and devotion services\, counsels and advises students\, and answers questions from race to religion to relationships. She is the advisor to the Muslim Students Association\, the Juvenile Justice Advocates\, and the Chess Club. Dr. Muhammad is the president of the Association of Muslim Chaplains and on the board of the Association for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Life in Higher Education. \n  \nWe would like to thank Rose Castle Foundation for their permission to use their content.

She studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was ordained in 2012. She also holds a Master’s degree from the Davidson School of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Sharofsky was the deputy director of the Jewish Welfare Board Jewish Chaplains Council\, where she worked with Jewish military personnel and veterans. \nRabbi Sharofsky is the recipient of the 2016 JPRO Network Young Professional Award for her dedication to the Jewish community through her work in the Jewish nonprofit field. She is a Rabbis Without Borders fellow\, 2018 cohort. He was a member of a Christian-Muslim breakfast group at Ezher Bloom Mosque for two years\, visited Turkey in 2015\, and participated in many interfaith conversations prior to his “first retirement” in 2016. \nHe and his wife Beverly\, a leadership development and communications coach\, enjoy two married sons and two grandchildren. SUMMARY:Religious Literacy Series: Sikh Foundation of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, January 17\, 2020\, Rumi Forum visited the Sikh Foundation of Virginia as it’s the first destination of the “Religious Literacy Series”. \nWe are living in an era where knowledge is power. Considering how transnational and diverse our globe has become\, simplistic and inaccurate representation of religion have always found its place among human agencies and understanding. Critical to this matter\, we believe there is a need to expand the ability to dispel misinformation and unpleasantness of personal biases. In the meantime\, today’s globalized world invites all of us to discern basic tenets of religious traditions in order to enhance social cohesion. Inspired by this understanding\, we are honored to launch our Religious Literacy visit series. \nThroughout this series\, we aim to adapt the fundamental but basic understanding of religions through numerous lenses. As participants gain an informed understanding of belief systems and other worldviews different from their own\, religious literacy series will enable them to hear first hand. It should be noted that this series does not intend to educate the participants but designed to assist the progress of recognition of history\, central texts (where applicable)\, beliefs\, practices\, and manifestations of several world traditions. \nOur first destination was the Sikh Foundation of Virginia. The evening featured a great presentation by Mr. Surinder Singh about the Sikh faith\, a tour of the Gurdwara\, a lively Q&A session\, and great food by the hosts.

SUMMARY:Unity Walk 2019
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 8th\, Rumi Forum participated in the 14th annual Unity Walk where over 1000 people of all faiths and backgrounds came together to celebrate the diversity of the DC metro area. It was a true joy and an insightful experience to have the opportunity to visit 11 different houses of worship\, actively engage with participants as well as with members of the clergy\, taste delicious traditional foods\, and partake in service projects. \n\n\nThrough this platform\, participants lift up their hearts and communities. Unity Walk once again reminded all that there are more positive values of compassion and civility than we usually think of. Rumi Forum is honored to be part of this great endeavor for the third time.\n\n

SUMMARY:Annual Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk 2019 was held on April 28th\, 2019 with the mission of bringing faith communities together to appreciate each other and feel part of the same whole despite our differences. \nThe walk took place on April 28th between 2 PM and 5 PM. The group started at the Fairfax United Methodist Church and continued by visiting Christian Science Church\, Daniels Run Peace Church\, Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia\, Truro Anglican Church\, Fairfax Presbyterian Church\, Fairfax Baptist Church\, and end with the Christ Lutheran Church. At each stop\, the group spent 5 minutes learning about that faith tradition. Please note that since there was no Jewish temple or a non-Abrahamic place of worship within the walking distance\, those faith traditions were invited to have space in some of the churches along this route.

SUMMARY:Religious Literacy: "Leil Shavu'ot and Suhoor"
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum was hosted by the Ohr Kodesh Congregation on May 20\, 2018\, for a joint celebration of Shavu’ot and Suhoor. \nTikkun Leil Shavuot\, also known as “A Night of Jewish Learning\,” is an opportunity to show that participants are ready to receive the Torah. Throughout the night\, people will gather to study the sacred text\, and facilitate a deeper connection with their faith. By staying awake during the anniversary of the Revelation\, followers signal to the heavens that they are ready to receive blessings from above. In the morning\, many share a Suhoor meal to precede their Ramadan fast. \nRumi Forum prides itself on its interfaith collaborations. We find it increasingly important to celebrate events in conjunction with faith-based communities. There is no better way to connect with another by sharing the joy your faith brings. Oftentimes\, the prevailing commonalities which can bridge neighborhoods\, are overshadowed by unfounded assumptions. Celebrate common points that everyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, and sexuality can enjoy. By inspiring community dialogue\, we hope to take another step forward in creating a peaceful\, tolerant\, environment for all to enjoy.

SUMMARY:Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk 2018 will be held on May 6th\, 2018 with the mission of bringing faith communities together to appreciate each other and feel part of the same whole despite our differences. \nMay 6th\, 2018 \n2 PM to 5 PM \nFairfax United Methodist Church \n10300 Stratford Ave\, Fairfax\, VA 22030 \nREGISTER HERE \nThe walk will take place on May 6th between 2 PM and 5 PM. The group will start at the Fairfax United Methodist Church and will continue by visiting Christian Science Church\, Daniels Run Peace Church (also hosting the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia)\, Ezher Mosque\, Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia\, Truro Anglican Church\, Fairfax Presbyterian Church\, Fairfax Baptist Church (also hosting the Calvary Hill Baptist Church)\, and end with the Christ Lutheran Church. At each stop\, the group will spend 5 minutes learning about that faith tradition. Please note that since there was no Jewish temple or a non-Abrahamic place of worship within the walking distance\, those faith traditions were invited to have a space in some of the churches along this route.  \nParticipants will park at the Fairfax United Methodist before the walk. When the walk ends at the Christ Lutheran\, there will be a shuttle bus service to the Fairfax United Methodist. \nYou can join the walk starting from the Fairfax Presbyterian as well. However there will be no shuttle service from Christ Lutheran back to the Fairfax Presbyterian.

DESCRIPTION:On March 15th Department Chair of Religion at George Washington University\, Robert Eisen joined the Rumi Forum for a presentation on Jews and how they have survived centuries of persecution and thrived in the West. \nDate: \nThursday\, March 15th\, 2018 \nTime: \n 11:45-12:15 (Reception)\n12:15-1:15 (Program) \nLocation: \nRumi Forum\n2000 P St. NW\nSuite #503\nWashington\, DC 20036 \n  \n  \nOver time\, Jews have endured great hardships and overcome challenging obstacles in order to be a successful minority religion in the West. Today\, Jews make up roughly 2% of the total population in North America while other Western countries such as France (2%)\, and the United Kingdom (2%) retain similar shares of the global Jewish population. From the adversities that accompany maintaining a religious minority identity\, Jews have amassed achievements in economic\, intellectual and artistic spheres. In this talk\, Professor Robert Eisen will share insights from a book he is currently writing about this occurrence. He will explain from an academic standpoint how Jewish religion and culture evolved over the centuries and prepared Jews for the challenges of the modern period. He will also attempt to share insights about what people from other cultures can learn from the success of Jews in the modern West.   \n  \nSpeaker: \nRobert Eisen is a Professor of Religion and Judaic Studies and Chair of the Department of Religion. The focus of his most recent research approaches to peace and violence in Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam. Eisen is the author of four books that reflect his varied interests: Gersonides on Providence\, Covenant\, and the Chosen People (State University of New York Press\, 1995); The Book of Job in Medieval Jewish Philosophy (Oxford University Press\, 2004); The Peace and Violence of Judaism: From the Bible to Modern Zionism (Oxford University Press\, 2011); Religious Zionism\, Jewish Law\, and the Morality of War (Oxford University Press\, 2017). He also co-edited Philosophers and the Jewish Bible (University of Maryland Press\, 2008) with Charles Manekin. Eisen is currently working on a book about why Jews have been remarkably successful in the modern Western world economically\, intellectually\, and culturally. Eisen has received a number of grants and awards to support his research\, including a Fulbright research grant at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1999-2000. He was also given a teaching award in 2005 from George Washington University in recognition of his contributions in the classroom. Eisen is active in adult education initiatives. He served from 1991-2008 on the Board of Directors for the Foundation for Jewish Studies which brings lecturers to Washington from academic institutions all over the world.  \n

What has God taught us about forgiveness? How do we practice that in our daily lives? As humans we are all prone to make mistakes that might intentionally or unintentionally hurt those around us\, so how do we go about practicing this act of self-love and peace? SUMMARY:Women’s Participation in the Decision-Making Processes and Economic Life
DESCRIPTION:On May 12th\, Sharon Kotok joined the Rumi Forum and ATFA for a discussion on women’s participation. \nSharon Kotok\, former foreign affairs officer at the U.S. Department of State discussed how women participate in the political decision-making process. \nWhen: Friday\, May 12th 7.00pm -9:00pm\nWhere: 11200 Waples Mill Road Suite 360\, Fairfax\, VA 22030 \nSpeaker’s Bio:\nSharon Kotok was a foreign affairs officer at the U.S. Department of State.  For over 20 years\, she worked with the United Nations on a number of global issues including the advancement of women’s rights\, a more effective UN response to humanitarian emergencies\, better delivery of food aid\, and an improved UN role in agricultural development.  She negotiated on behalf of the United States several UN documents\, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the UN’s Fourth World Conference on Women.  In 2000-2001\, she was detailed to the White House to be part of the World Conference Against Racism Task Force.  She retired from the State Department in 2008\, but returned in 2009\, to work in the Office of Global Women’s Issues\, where she was part of the team that developed the U.S. National Action Plan on Women\, Peace\, and Security.  In 2013 and 2014\, she was appointed to be a member of the U.S. delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

It is important in today’s world to reach out to our neighbours who may be strangers in order to unify as a community that is all part of the same whole. \nThe walk took place on May 21st between 2 PM and 5 PM. The group started at the Fairfax United Methodist Church and continued by visiting St Leo the Great Catholic Church\, Daniels Run Peace Church\, Ezher Mosque\, Truro Anglican Church\, Fairfax Presbyterian Church\, Fairfax Baptist Church\, and end with the Christ Lutheran Church. Proceeds collected from the event were donated to these organizations that provide valuable services to the local community. DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum partnered with several other organizations for a Fairfax Town Hall meeting on September 10\, 2016. \n\n\nWith the continued violence against unarmed black men and women\, and recent attacks on police officers across the nation\, Fairfax County is inviting residents\, public officials and law enforcement to engage in important and difficult conversations in order to listen and learn from one another. \nTo address concerns within our community\, Fairfax County’s Communities of Trust Committee (COTC) will host a Town Hall Meeting with the theme Communities Working Together: Justice\, Unity and Peace. This event will be an opportunity to share and discuss Fairfax County public safety initiatives\, listen and respond to concerns from local residents\, and discuss suggestions for growth and improvements in the area of community policing. At this forum\, Police officers will talk about what it is like working on the street\, and residents will discuss their encounters with police. Communities Working Together will also engage the audience to learn about their roles and responsibilities in keeping our neighborhoods safe and enhancing trust within the community. COTC members focus on strengthening and building positive relations between public safety agencies and the communities they serve\, with special emphasis on law enforcement\, to advance collaboration\, partnerships and outreach. DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum is a sponsor to this year’s Unity Walk organized by InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington on September 11\, 2016. \nOn September 11th\, 2016\, people of all faiths and cultures from around the Washington\, DC region will walk down Massachusetts Avenue and visit houses of worship and other religious centers in a public celebration of unity and support for everyone within our diverse community. \nToday\, more than ever\, our message of friendship and solidarity is critical. We hope you will join us and add your voice to this powerful event. \nThe Unity Walk is open and free to everyone. There is a suggested donation of $25 for adults and $10 for students\, seniors\, and those of limited income. The first will be at Washington Hebrew Congregation (WHC) between 12:30pm and 1:30pm.  Together with WHC and Friendship Place\, we will be collecting long underwear to help men\, women\, and children in need in the DC area. We invite all walkers to donate a pair (or more) of long underwear when they arrive at WHC. Sizes XL and larger are best\, although all sizes are welcome. \nThe second will be apple bagging at Annunication Catholic Church\, between 2pm and 3pm.
