SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Interfaith Bridges\, Intrafaith Divides\, and Polarization
DESCRIPTION:On March 30\, 2023\, Rumi Forum and the Braver Angels D.C. Project organized a special America’s Public Forum event on interfaith alignments\, intrafaith divisions\, and the experiences of religious communities in American polarization in our time. \nDiscussants were Rich Tafel\, Minister of the Church of the Holy City in downtown Washington\, D.C.\, and Ibrahim Anli\, Executive Director of Rumi Forum. Between their interfaith and pastoral and intellectual work\, they brought decades’ worth of experience to questions of the place of religion in American public life amid all the divides of the recent past. Luke Nathan Phillips of Braver Angels hosted a conversation with them examining the ongoing divides in and between religious communities\, the lasting common ground and prospects for new bridges among them\, and the ways religious communities’ navigation of these divisions might inform approaches to American polarization as a whole. \nFollowing the conversation\, including audience Q&A\, participants joined an Iftar dinner courtesy of the Rumi Forum. The event took place at the Friends Meeting of Washington\, DC. \nEvent Photos \n[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”409″ display=”basic_thumbnail” thumbnail_crop=”0″]

SUMMARY:Exhibit: "Un-Muted - The Silent Voices of Political Persecution in Turkey"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit and presentation was a powerful and moving visual experience of a highly harsh reality happening in Turkey now.  \nThe Hizmet people are seekers of peace and justice; they are committed to education and the eradication of poverty throughout the world. The government\, led by President Erdogan\, has evolved into a brutal\, military regime that tortures and imprisons the Hizmet people linked by membership or affiliation with a peaceful and liberal Islamic faith expression. Under the guise of Islamic law\, President Erdogan has misused political power to isolate and eliminate opposition\, resulting in quashing voices of dissent in a country once a bastion of liberal democracy. Many Hizmet and Kurdish people have lost their lives at the hands of this injustice. \nThe exhibit consists of around 40 pieces and their detailed stories\, such as Kurdish political prisoner Garibe Gezer who was sexually harassed\, tortured\, and killed in jail; dismissed professor Haluk Savas who was denied his right to travel to get medical treatment for cancer and eventually died\, 11-year-old Kurdish girl Cemile Cagin who was killed by a sniper during a curfew and whose dead body had to be kept in a freezer by her mother for days\, and Ahmet Burhan Atac\, a young boy who died of cancer before his mother was denied her right to travel with him to get treatment. \nThe artifacts in this exhibit were generously donated by the families of voices silenced by torture\, persecution\, and death. We are grateful for this opportunity to unmute their voices and share their stories through this presentation. \nEvent Video \n\n  \nEvent Photos \n[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”411″ display=”basic_thumbnail” thumbnail_crop=”0″]Co-Sponsored by: \nAdvocates of Silenced Turkey`s mission is (1) to address all human rights violations in Turkey regarding civil\, political\, economic\, social\, and cultural as contained in the basic human rights documents; (2) to prevent genocide\, crime against humanity\, arbitrary detention\, torture and ill-treatment\, and discrimination and to defend the right to life\, rule of law\, right to privacy\, freedom of expression\, freedom of thought\, conscience\, and religion\, freedom of associations\, and (3) to utilize all human rights advocacy tools\, mechanisms\, and systems that can possibly be used to protect and promote the human rights of those whose voices are being silenced in Turkey and beyond. \n[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum had its monthly circle on May 18\, 2023\, to study Abrahamic scriptures on the topic of “Noah” with our study leader\, Rabbi Chana Leslie Glazer\, from Temple Brith Achim (King of Prussia\, PA). \nScriptural Reasoning (SR) allows Christians\, Jews\, and Muslims to study each other’s sacred texts. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: "Faith and Polarization"
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum\, Jewish Islamic Dialogue Society (JIDS)\, and Braver Angels have looked at political polarization before. However\, on October 29\, 2023\, we’ll look at the subject through a different prism: faith. What roles does faith play in the political and cultural schisms that mar our society? Is it a cause of the problem? Or is it a potential antidote? And most importantly\, what can we\, as people of faith or members of faith communities\, do to confront these issues? \nJoin Rumi Forum\, JIDS\, Braver Angels\, and our host\, Kol Ami Reconstructionist Community\, in what figures to be a fascinating afternoon. It will kick off with presentations by Ibrahim Anli\, Executive Director of Rumi Forum\, a Braver Angels Scholars Council member\, and Sofi Hersher Andorsky\, V.P. of Strategy and Communications at A More Perfect Union: The Jewish Partnership for Democracy. One-on-one conversations\, small group discussions\, and a return to plenary session for an action-oriented conclusion to the event will follow. \nPresenters \n \nIbrahim Anli is a civic entrepreneur with a career record that bridges nonprofit and academic experience. He was a visiting researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2007-08. Ibrahim joined the Journalists and Writers Foundation’s (JWF) Ankara office as the diplomacy coordinator in 2010. SUMMARY:Scriptural Reasoning: "Refugees"
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum had its monthly circle on January 18\, 2024\, to study Abrahamic scriptures on the topic of “Refugees” with our study leader\, Aaron R. Dunn\, from the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. \nScriptural Reasoning (SR) allows Christians\, Jews\, and Muslims to study each other’s sacred texts. SR participants meet monthly to read short passages on a topic from their respective scriptures. SUMMARY:Interreligious Communities Project: Site Visit to Drikung Dharma Surya Center
DESCRIPTION:Rumi Forum and Sharing Sacred Spaces visited the Drikung Dharma Surya Center in Fairfax\, VA\, on Sunday\, January 28\, from  7 to 9:30 pm. This interfaith visit had representatives from six different religious communities present to explore this sacred space and build understanding and unity across faiths. These congregations are participating in an interreligious effort to build understanding and solidarity across differences.
