Synopsis: In an era of Twitter and Facebook, when the difference between information and misinformation is increasingly blurred, Washington Post Managing Editor Raju Narisetti and Foreign Editor Douglas Jehl talk about how the Post approaches global events and how it tries to build bridges between readers in Washington and around the world. The session is planned as an interactive conversation with the audience.

Douglas Jehl is foreign editor of The Washington Post, overseeing all news coverage outside the United States. He directs a distinguished staff that includes 18 correspondents in 15 foreign bureaus. Until August 2009, Mr. Jehl was deputy Washington bureau chief of The New York Times, overseeing coverage of national security matters. He led members of a team from The Times that won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 2009 for coverage of the conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

 

Before becoming an editor, Mr. Jehl spent 19 years as a reporter, filing stories from more than 40 countries. As a Washington correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, he covered two presidential campaigns; the environment; the war on drugs; and the White House. He also covered the conflict in Panama in 1989 and the Persian Gulf war of 1991, for which he was awarded the Gerald R. Ford prize for Distinguished Reporting on Military Affairs in 1992.

At The New York Times, beginning in 1993, Mr. Jehl served as White House correspondent; as Middle East bureau chief, based in Cairo; as national environmental correspondent; and then as a national security correspondent, specializing in intelligence matters. In 2002, Mr. Jehl was among a team from The Times that won a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism, for his reporting from Saudi Arabia during the months after the Sept. 11 attacks, focusing on Al Qaeda and its roots.

Mr. Jehl graduated in 1984 from Stanford University and in 1987 from Oxford University, where he earned a master’s degree in international relations and was a Rhodes Scholar. He was co-editor of “Whose Water is It? The Insatiable Thirst of a Water-Hungry World,’’ published by National Geographic Books in 2003. He and his wife, Lisa Truitt, live in Bethesda, Md. with their two children.

Prior to joining the Post in January 2009, he was the founding editor of Mint, a business daily newspaper and website in India, published by HT Media Ltd.

 

Earlier, he spent 13 years at The Wall Street Journal, where he was the Editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe and a Deputy Managing Editor of The Wall Street Journal USA. He earned a BA in Economics and Sociology from Osmania University, Hyderabad, and a postgraduate diploma in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management, Anand. He also holds a postgraduate diploma from the Times of India School of Journalism, New Delhi, and an MA in Journalism from Indiana University. Raju is on the board of the World Editors Forum and is a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum. He lives in Bethesda, Md.

Ali H. Aslan is Washington Correspondent of Turkey’s largest daily newspaper Zaman.
 
Prior to starting his current position in Washington in 1997, Mr. Aslan worked at Zaman’s Istanbul headquarters in various capacities including Deputy News Editor. Currently, Mr. Aslan also writes a weekly column on international relations for Zaman and its English language affiliate, Today’s Zaman. Mr. Aslan is a frequent contributor to the Turkish national television network Samanyolu (STV), and weekly news magazine Aksiyon covering international relations with special focus on the US and Turkey. Mr. Aslan was born in Adana, Turkey, and holds a BA from Turkey’s prestigious Bogazici (Bosphorus) University. He and his wife live in Fairfax, VA with their two sons.
