The film follows the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking Bowling Alone research on the decline of community connections may hold answers to today’s democratic crisis. Alongside influential voices such as Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker, as well as grassroots groups building community across the country, Putnam explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work?
