The Rumi Forum organized four fellowship opportunities to Thailand-Cambodia, Morocco, Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan, and Brasil for the spring of 2017.

 

This fellowship extended to four separate programs: Thailand-Cambodia, Morocco, Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan, and Brasil with the mission of exploring social, economic, cultural, security and political issues in these countries and their wider regions in 2017.

Below are the travel dates for each program:
Thailand and Cambodia (February 24 – March 5, 2017)
Morocco (March 25 – March 31, 2017)
Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan (April 23 – 30, 2017)
Brasil (May 12 – May 20, 2017)

During trips, fellows will have an opportunity to meet with civil society organizations, government officials, journalists, academicians and think-tank scholars, among others, and gain an insight into some of the following:
Social harmony, faith, and cultural issues

  • Peace building and conflict resolution
  • Economic Development
  • Democratization, human rights and freedoms
  • Women’s issues
  • Minority issues
  • Education
  • Economic, political and social reforms
  • Relations with the US and regional issue

 

Fellowship Eligibility and Conditions:

Applicant’s work or field of study should be on the following issues and/or regions:

Regional focus: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Cambodia, Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, Russia, North Africa, Middle East, China, Asia-Pacific, Brasil and Latin America.

Issues: Interfaith and social harmony, peace building and peace making, sociology and social movements, NGOs and civil society, religion and culture, international security, geostrategy, global strategy, conflict management/resolution/prevention, international affairs, international development, security studies, defense, terrorism/counter-terrorism, democracy and human rights, national security, women’s and minority issues, journalism, energy, politics and political economy.

Eligibility: Individuals from academia (including Ph.D. students) think tank and policy experts, media and communications, government and diplomacy advocates, faith and cultural organizations, NGOs and non-profits and broader community leaders will be considered for these trips.

All applicants need to be based in the following areas: Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, and Maryland.

Cost: All participants will have to purchase their airfare to and from the desired country of the trip. The participants are expected to contribute towards some of the expenses. The contribution amounts are:

Thailand and Cambodia is $1250
Morocco $1200
Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan $900
Brasil $1500

The deadline for Morocco trip is February 27, 2017, and for Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan March 31, 2017 (Brasil TBA). The application form will require you to submit information including the below:

  • 300-400 word biography
  • A statement detailing your current professional work and the potential benefits of this trip to your professional work and future career.

Once your application is approved we will ask you to send in your contribution check. Once all the checks are collected, you will be asked to purchase your international airfare.
